Boosting the longevity of your massage - 5 self care tips in between sessions!
One of the things I often remind my clients is this:
Having massage is all well and good and certainly beneficial, however, what you do in between sessions to support this is key!
Massage can help release tension, improve movement, reduce discomfort, lower stress levels and encourage your body back towards its optimal state. However, the real magic happens in the days and weeks between your appointments. The small choices you make every day can either support the work we’ve done together or gradually allow old patterns to return.
If your goal is to feel your best, move more freely and support long term health, here are five simple ways to extend the benefits of your massage and nurture your body between sessions.
Hydrate well - water is your body’s best friend
Hydration is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to support your body. It also supports lymphatic system. Proper hydration allows nutrients to be transported where they are needed most, supporting your muscles, bones, tissues, facial system and overall wellbeing. Dehydration can present as brain fog, headaches, stiff muscles & lethargy.
Quick Tip : aim for at least 2 litres of water daily. Increased during hot weather or after sport. Tea or coffee does not equal water!
Keep moving and stretch often
Our bodies are designed to move. One of the biggest reasons tension returns after a massage is because we slip back into the same daily habits and positions. Gentle movement throughout the day helps maintain flexibility, encourages circulation and can prevent stiffness from creeping back in.
The good news is that movement doesn’t have to mean an hour long programme. The key is to weave small moments of movement into your existing routine:
stretch while waiting for the kettle to boil
take a few shoulder rolls whilst at red traffic lights in the car
reach overhead before stepping into the shower
stand up and move intentionally whenever you refill your water bottle
take a short walk during phone calls
These small actions may seem insignificant but over time they create healthy habits that become effortless and support the work we do together.
Quick tip : Think little and often. A few minutes of movement several times a day is often more effective than one long stretch session once a week.
Pay attention to your posture
Posture isn’t about having 100% perfect posture 100% of the time. Rather it’s about creating awareness and correcting when noticing we could be in better posture.
Poor postural habits can gradually undo much of the progress made during massage. Long hours at a desk, looking down at a device, holding babies or standing unevenly can place unnecessary strain on muscles and joints.
A simple cue I often recommend is “Think length through the spine”. Imagine creating space between each segment of the spine and lift through the crown of the head.
Quick Tip : Place post it notes around the kitchen, bathroom or workspace with reminders such as
stand tall
relax shoulders
breathe/release
sit tall
open chest
These gentle prompts can help reset your posture throughout the day without requiring much effort.
Nourish your body with anti inflammatory foods
What we put into our bodes has a direct impact on how we feel.
A balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods help support tissue repair, bone health, muscle recovery and well being. It can also help reduce the low level inflammation that contributes to aches, stiffness and fatigue.
Incorporate foods such as
colourful fruit & vegetables
oily fish
nuts & seeds
Olive oil
whole grains
herbs & spices in particular turmeric, black pepper and ginger.
Consistency over perfection - small improvements made regularly often create long term benefits.
Quick tip : try adding one extra portion of vegetables to your lunch or dinner, ingest a teaspoon of olive oil within your bedtime routine.
Prioritise rest and recovery
We often think of self care as something we need to add to our schedule- whereas the most beneficial thing we can do is slow down.
Your body repairs, restores and rebalances during rest. Without adequate recovery, muscles remain under stress and the nervous system struggles to switch out of “survival mode”. Creating simple recovery rituals can make a significant difference.
maintain a consistent bedtime (ensuring adequate sleep 7hours+)
reduce screen time before sleep
pause during the day to take some slower deeper breaths
spend time outdoors
give yourself permission to pause
Remember healing isn’t always about doing more, it’s about creating space for your body to naturally do what it knows how to do.
Final Thought
Massage is not just about relieving tension in the moment. It’s about helping your body return to a state where it can function optimally, move freely and support you in living life at your very best.
The treatments we share together are one part of that journey. The choices you make between sessions are the other.
By staying hydrated, moving regularly, creating postural awareness, nourishing your body, prioritising rest - you are actively supporting your own well being and supporting the benefits of your massage.
Your body works hard for you every day. A little consistent care goes a long way.
